What remains of home when security becomes fragile?
A site-specific installation exploring the fragile balance between protection, vulnerability, and the human need for belonging.
In Home Sweet Home, Alessandra Beltrame explores the fragility of contemporary existence against the backdrop of social, political, and material uncertainty. At the centre of the installation is the emergency blanket, a material associated with protection and survival. Removed from its original context and placed within a domestic setting, it becomes a symbol of both security and vulnerability. The work reflects on the fundamental human need for safety and examines how this search is shaped by individual experience and contemporary realities.
The installation creates a dialogue between emergency blankets and the traditional idea of home as a place of stability, protection, and comfort. Suspended emergency foils are positioned in contrast to a path of stones laid across the floor, creating a visual tension between permanence and uncertainty. Through this relationship, Home Sweet Home raises questions about the meaning of security and the conditions that influence our sense of protection in contemporary society.
